"Cleve R.F.C Downend" was formed in 1922, played their first game at Staple Hill in a field now known as Staple Hill Park. Later moved to what is known as Vassells Park in Fishponds. Players changed in the back room of the Full Moon public house. While playing at Vassells the word Downend was removed from the club name. A wooden pavilion was purchased for £200 in November 1934.
Because of home development "Cleve RFC" moved to Bromley Heath Road in 1939, taking our pavilion with us. Further land was purchased in 1947 and farmed by members for several years before developing more pitches to meet the growing local interest in rugby football. Between 1969 and 1971 members added more facilities which carried the club through the next 25 years.
The club badge is based on the coat of arms of the Cave Estate from whom the ground was purchased and the ears of wheat acknowledge the farming activity after the War.
The club motto `We sow to reap` records these early events but also reflects the clubs commitment to providing rugby facilities and coaching for children from the age of six.
We moved to our new clubhouse and grounds `The Hayfields` in September 1997. We run three senior sides on a Saturday and all minis and junior levels from under 7`s through to colts on Sunday. Within the club there is a loyal membership and a very social atmosphere.
We are committed to providing a centre of excellence for the playing of rugby football whilst further enhancing the unique spirit and friendship at the club. In doing so we seek to provide the local community with a focal point for rugby and other sporting and social activities for the enjoyment of all involved.
